How AF-ON Changed the Way I Take Photos

Capturing the Perfect Moment with AF-ON

In situations like the one shown in the example photo, capturing the right moment can be a real challenge—especially for those relying on shutter button autofocus (half-press focusing).

So, what exactly is AF-ON, and how does it change the game? Let’s find out!

1. Understanding AF-S vs. AF-C

Most modern cameras offer at least two autofocus (AF) modes:

  • AF-S (Single Shot AF): Focus locks once the subject is acquired and does not adjust further.
  • AF-C (Continuous AF): Continues adjusting focus even after the shutter is pressed.

Typically, AF-S is ideal for still subjects, while AF-C is better for moving subjects. But here’s the question:

Can you switch between AF-S and AF-C fast enough when the situation changes?

For me, the answer is NO.

2. Smart Autofocus Technologies Aren’t Always Enough

To help photographers, brands like Canon, Sony, and Nikon have introduced advanced tracking technologies such as AI Servo, Eye Tracking, and 3D Tracking. These smart AF systems are designed to automatically decide between AF-S and AF-C, making them useful for those unsure of which mode to use.

But if these technologies exist, why not just use them all the time?

The answer is simple: fully automatic focusing doesn’t always align with your creative intent. The camera doesn’t “understand” what you want to capture the way you do.

3. The Reality of Autofocus Limitations

Cameras provide multiple focus modes and customization options, but no single mode works perfectly in every situation.

For example, when capturing fast-moving subjects—like a soccer ball flying into a goal—the camera’s AF might focus on the net or background instead. Even the fastest cameras can struggle to track such rapid movements.

(Exception: High-end models like the Sony A9 or Canon R3 significantly improve focus accuracy, but not everyone has access to them!)

So, how can we improve focus speed and accuracy while avoiding missed shots?

That’s where AF-ON comes in!

How AF-ON Improves Your Shooting Workflow

At first glance, pressing one button for both focusing and shooting (shutter button AF) may seem faster than using two separate buttons. But let’s break it down:

  • Traditional AF-S Workflow:

    1. Autofocus (half-press shutter)
    2. Shoot (full press shutter)
    • If you take 10 shots, you repeat this process 10 times20 total actions
  • AF-ON Workflow:

    1. Focus once with AF-ON
    2. Shoot as many times as needed
    • If you take 10 shots, you only press AF-ON once and shutter 10 times11 total actions

20 > 11Fewer actions = Faster shooting

With AF-ON, you take more shots without worrying about autofocus errors, which every camera has to some extent.

But what if the subject moves after I focus? Won’t I miss the shot?

That’s the magic of AF-ON Hold Mode! Holding the AF-ON button allows continuous focus tracking without delay, seamlessly transitioning between AF-S and AF-C as needed.

Then why not just use AF-C all the time?

Good question! The difference is that switching back to AF-S from AF-C requires toggling a physical switch (usually on the lens). With AF-ON, you don’t need to change settings manually—it’s instant.

The Versatility of AF-ON

AF-ON isn’t just for sports photography. It enhances all types of shooting, including:

Street & Travel Photography – Quick, reliable focusing without missing spontaneous moments.
Landscape Photography – Helps lock focus on foreground elements or stars for precise compositions.
Low-Light Photography – Turns off autofocus instantly, allowing manual focusing on a fixed point.
Sharing the Camera – Let others take shots without worrying about focus settings.
Creative Compositions – Freely adjust framing without refocusing issues.
Higher FPS (Frames Per Second) – More frames captured compared to traditional AF-S focusing.

Final Thoughts

If you want faster, more precise, and more intuitive autofocus control, switching to AF-ON will transform your photography experience. Whether you shoot portraits, action, or landscapes, AF-ON gives you the flexibility and accuracy that shutter button autofocus can’t match.

So, are you ready to take your photography to the next level? Try AF-ON today!
